  A sudden idea occurred to Percy. What about this? He picked up Caligula’s spear and inspected it. Forged from a single piece of pure celestial bronze, could it channel power like Poseidon’s trident or Zeus’ bolt? That will help, Kronos said. Testing its weight, Percy briefly wondered if it was cyclops-made given Caligula’s fascination with cyclopes, then he pointed it in the direction the explosions had come from. “On three,” he said to Luke and Tyson, then threw (most of) his power behind Kronos’ attempt to freeze time in the basement. Power surged in his veins; the spear thrummed in his grip and bolts of golden light arched off it into the ground. After three seconds, Luke drew Backbiter across Nero’s neck, severing his soul.

  Regal and solemn, Hades reclined on his throne, holding his two-pronged bident in one hand. His robes were dark as night, woven of the shades of the damned, and a crown of obsidian and flame rested on his head. His face, though—Kronos hadn’t seen him for millennia; the last time was when— but a parent never forgets their child. “Son of Poseidon,” Hades intoned. “You have something in your possession which belongs to me.”
